Classic Granny Square Pattern

Classic Granny Square Tutorial

Hello Good People! In this post I’m sharing with you the free written pattern for the classic or basic granny square. This pattern is very easy to learn and beginner friendly. I also have created a YouTube tutorial to go along side this pattern which you can find above!

Supplies: 5.0mm hook, embroidery scissors, tapestry needle, Yarn Bee Pearl Spun Yarn colors in Hazy Hazel, Jade, Majestic Plum, and Moss.

Stitches (US): double crochet (dc), slip stitch (ss)

Note: This pattern uses the magic circle. In the video I share how to create this. There are no chains in between the dc groups after round 1 (but will still refer to the spaces in between the dc groups as chain spaces). Also, if you are using the same color in each round you, don’t have to tie off. Just keep going ignoring this step. Finally, up to round 4 this pattern makes squares that are 4×4 inches.

Round 1: Magic circle, ch3 (counts as a dc), 2dc, ch2. *3dc, ch2. *repeat this step 2 more times. (Should have 4 dc groups at the end of the round.) Ss into starting chain and tie off.

Round 2: Add new color into any chain space. Ch3, 2dc. *Next chain space crochet 3dc, ch2, 3dc. *repeat this step 2 more times. In the starting chain space crochet 3dc, ch2, ss into starting chain (In this round you are simply making the corners). Tie off.

Round 3: Add new color into any corner chain space. Ch3, 2dc. *Next chain space 3dc. To form the corner do 3dc, ch2, 3dc. *repeat this step 2 more times. 3dc. In the starting chain space 3dc, ch2, ss into starting chain. Tie off.

Round 4: Add new color into any corner chain space. Ch3, 2dc. *Next chain space 3dc. 3dc. 3dc, ch2, 3dc. *repeat this step 2 more times. Place 3dc into the remaining chain spaces. In the starting chain space do 3dc, ch2, ss into starting chain. Tie off. Weave in your ends.

You can always add as many rounds as you’d like. I hope this pattern was helpful. Please feel free to comment below. Again, you can watch the tutorial on my YouTube channel for a step by step guide while you’re at it please subscribe to my channel! Would love to see you there!

Yours truly,
